The best way to fight poverty is to promote education and fight illitracy. You can help us fight poverty in East Africa by donating your old mobile phone.
How does it work?
Donated mobile phones are shipped and sold in the recipient countries by our local womens group partners. The money that the sales bring in is used for paying school fees for children under the age of fifteen. Our phones are taken to Africa with friends and colleagues that travel to the continent, and sold on the local markets. Each phone is tracked individually through our internet based database. You can get information about what happend to your donated phone, and see how much schooling it actually paid for.
History
We cannot fight poverty but we can fight ilitracy. one cannot combain both. i have always thought of what to do to help the children to be able to go to school, until today the 14th september that i came up with this idea. Why not save an old mobile telephone and send it to a poor child? I also felt that many NGOs and aid agencies are more there for their own sake, rather than for promoting real development (I recommend the excellent book by John reader called The white mans burden), that in my view is the best account of how the donating business fails in doing much contribution to third world development). In order to allow the donors to get more involved and have the possibility of follow up on their donations, givecell created the internet based dataabse where all donations can be tracked by the donor.
